Our Maine Wood + Sustainability Tour is back for the third year!
Architects, engineers and designers: Have you wondered about the forestry behind Maine wood, how wood gets to market, and who brings wood to the mill and the lumberyard? Local Wood WORKS invites you to participate in a professional workshop for design and engineering professionals focused on: growing Maine’s local wood economy; sustainable forestry practices; and forestland conservation. Seven professional credits available through AIA.
This year we will meet in Portland and head south to:
Saco Manufacturing & Woodworking, a company that has transitioned from its founding in 1872 to new markets but still produces wood turnings at the same location. Pleasant River Pine and Wood & Sons in Sanford, one of Maine’s high-production sawmills, where saw dust residues support a second business, Wood & Sons, that produces wood pellets for the home heating market. Ecology School in Saco, Maine’s first Living Building Challenge project, is taking shape in the construction of a new dormitory and dining commons. Construction of the buildings will actually improve the environment. Sustainable timber harvest, on a small woodlot being managed according to sustainable forestry principles.
Cost per participant includes transportation and lunch. $100, Registration limited to 20 participants. Bus departs from Portland at 7:30 a.m Thursday, November 7, and returns at 5:00 p.m.
